大きさは違いますが、タチアの仲間です。
夜行性で魚食性のため混泳する魚種には注意が必要です。
飼育は容易。

詳細説明
本種は当初グラニディウム属 Glanidium piresi として記載されたが、その後トカンチンシア属 Tocantinsia に移され現在（2026年6月）に至っている。
本属にはピレシただ一種が認められている。
本種を含むアウケニプテルス科 Auchenipteridae 魚類は、頑丈な頭骨とやや反り返った太く丈夫な胸鰭棘条を持ち、その前後に粗い鋸歯を持っている。背鰭にも同様な棘条を持ち、網などに引っかかると取り外すのが厄介である。
口器は比較的大きく頭部先端か、もしくは受け口に成ることがある。
上下の顎骨には歯板を形成し食物を飲み込む。
